Campaigning for NRM Central Executive Committee (CEC) positions continues to gather heat with different contestants taking jabs at each other in order to win favor of the delegates.
On Wednesday, The Minister of State for Housing, Chris Baryomunsi took a veiled jab at Maj. Gen (Rtd) Matayo Kyaligonza whom he is looking to replace
as the National Resistance Movement (NRM) party National Vice Chairperson
Western Region. Baryomunsi also Kinkizi East MP rode on Kyaligonza ugly past to project himself as the best candidate for the position. He dag up an incident where the General assaulted a female Police ocer and assured the delegates that he (Baryomunsi) morals are far better.
“When I consulted the Greater Masaka region, a woman delegate asked me a passionate question. She said ‘If we vote you as we are going to, to become our Vice Chairperson Western Region, are you also going to start slapping women especially police women in uniform?” Baryomunsi said in his campaign speech “And I said ‘No, I am a Doctor, trained to handle women and to save lives’. That’s why I moved a law to stop female genital mutilation. My track record is very clear. I request Ugandans to trust me,” he added.
Eight contestants had expressed interest in the position, including former Army Spokesperson Col (Rtd) Shaban Bantariza, Former Kalungu Woman MP Kintu Florence Tumwine, Dr. Emmanuel Diini Kisembo, former Busongora South MP Boaz Kafunda and others. However, reports recently indicated that Bantaliza had been asked by Museveveni to withdraw his candidature.
Baryomunsi was recently quoted by URN as saying Gen. Kyaligonza’s representation of issues concerning the Western Region on the Party’s top organ, the Central Executive Committee (CEC) is not satisfactory and that it is time for him to take on the mantra.
He also noted that Uganda’s population is currently dominated by youth and that he is the person who can bridge the gap between the youth and the elders on CEC.
Five years ago, President Yoweri Museveni’s son-in-law Odrek Rwabwogo sought to contest for the position against Kyaligonza only for him to be allegedly asked to stand down for the General.
